The first thing you should focus on for the new year is your health. When you think about getting healthier in the new year, dieting is the first thing that comes to mind. It’s also a great time to do some preventative measures. When is the last time you had a physical? Have you ever? A physical is a specific examination that covers the basic foundations of good health. The common checks you likely expect are blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight, temperature, and breathing. Your eyes, ears, and throat will also be checked; as well as reflexes.
You’ll also be asked to update your health history for your records. Blood work will also be likely since so many unseen problems can be found in your blood analysis. Don’t put it off.
Find underlying health problems as early as possible
You doctor may order more in-depth testing as a part of your physical examination. For women, a physical generally includes a pap smear and pelvic exam. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s the best way to detect early cancer. A breast exam is common along with a recommendation for a mammogram if it’s time for one.
Don’t worry women, men don’t fare much better with their exam including prostate screening and testicular exam. These are the types of exams that are certainly uncomfortable for most people, but absolutely vital to maintain good health.
If you are diagnosed with a critical disease that should have been but was not detected on your physical exam you can seek the advise of a medical malpractice attorney. This is especially true if the disease is life threatening and should have been discovered. You should seek advise especially if early detection could have made the difference in life or death.
Prevent serious health problems
For most people, a physical exam is as routine as going to the dentist. Your health care provider will check you out and give you information on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If something suspicious should be found, you’ll be able to seek the care of a specialist that can take care of any problem areas found. You only have one body. Knowing of any underlying problem you may have could save your life. You know they say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care.
It’s time to get back to life
If the virus has prevented you from going to the doctor the past two years, don’t put it off any longer. It’s time to start living your life without the fear. As a survivor of the virus, I promise you it’s not as scary as you may think. Should you test positive, don’t panic- remember there’s a 99.5% survival rate. Seek treatment. Don’t let your doctor just sent you home with nothing and say if it gets worse go to the hospital. Be proactive. There are therapeutics available and if you take them early, the length of time you’re feeling sick can be reduced.
In the meantime, do what you’ve always done. Wash your hands, cover your mouth when your cough or sneeze (with your elbow not your hand). Smile and move forward. Don’t be afraid to go to the doctor. Get your physical to be sure you’re on the right tract. There’s nothing more important than your health. You shouldn’t take it for granted. It’s not selfish to focus on your health and to take care of yourself.
