Easy “Gather” Wood Sign

The new welcome word is “Gather”

Our oldest daughter Ashten and her new husband Dustin recently moved into their just-built dream home. She asked if we could make a “Gather” wood sign to go above their pantry door. That was a great idea for the space. The request was for a whitewashed sign in the same finish as our farmhouse coffee table.

This is such an easy DIY project if you have the tools to make it. If you don’t have a table saw, I believe you can buy ready made wood slabs at the craft store that can be used. It won’t be as cheaply made, but it will definitely work! We were fortunate enough to be able to use a scrap piece of wood leftover from another project. A stencil can also be used instead of the vinyl sign I created on my Silhouette cutter.

How We Made It

Cut a 1 x 12 whiteboard to 22″ long. We sanded the board and slightly rounded the corners. Be sure it’s smooth so it will receive the paint and glaze well. Adding the glaze helps the paint to flow more easily over the freshly sanded wood.

Chalk paint mixed with a little bit of glaze gives the wood a whitewashed look.

Apply the paint/glaze with a foam brush.

You want to be able to see the wood grain a bit. This gives a bit of a rustic look to the sign.

Add the vinyl lettering to the board. If you’re confident in your stenciling ability- that will work just as well.

Spray a coat of matte clear enamel or other poly spray to protect the sign. We added two picture hangers on the back to be able to hang it on the wall.

The result is wonderful! I love the farmhouse look to the sign that works in almost any decor.
