How can you use a bedskirt with an adjustable bed?
We recently purchased a split king adjustable bed- which is essentially two twin adjustable bases and two twin memory foam mattresses. This bed’s “zero gravity” setting has made my sleep so much more restful. I love it!
Using a standard king sized bed headboard, footboard, and rails worked out perfectly; the adjustable bases fit inside exactly. The only problem with the adjustable bases is that we couldn’t use the traditional bedskirt that came with the bedding we purchased. This was a problem, because you could see the legs of the adjustable bases below the bed frame.
Time to get creative!
We had the bedskirt that came with our bedding; as I mentioned, the problem is, with two separate bases where the head and foot move independently of each other, it was impossible to put the traditional bedskirt on top of the bases as you would normally do. I solved this dilemma but cutting the bedskirt portion away from the part that would normally sit under the mattress.
I purchased some self-adhesive Velcro strips made specifically to be used on fabric. This is important- buy the style meant for fabric or you risk it not adhering properly. It seemed the best way to attach the bedskirt, was to attach it directly to the bed frame.
This task would be easier accomplished if it could be done before the bed bases are inside the frame. We installed the frame around the bases, so this wasn’t possible. So, I had to start the bedskirt from underneath the bedframe. I pulled it up through the frame to the length I wanted.
The frame held the bedskirt in place. We took the Velcro strips and stuck them together before cutting. We measured out and cut the Velcro into three inch strips to space them around the bed frame.
Attaching the Bedskirt
Here’s how you do it: Start in a corner at the foot board. It is important to start here and then work your way to the headboard to be sure you have the actual corner of the bedskirt in the corner. If you start at the headboard, it’s possible that you could be off and the corner of the skirt not make it to the corner of the frame, if that makes any sense at all. Work your way up to the headboard from there.
Adhere the Velcro adhesive to the bed frame first by peeling the protective strip and pressing it firmly to the frame. Then remove the other protective strip and press the fabric to the Velcro that’s on the frame. This is why it’s important that the Velcro strips are fitted together before attaching. Continue to work your way all the way around the bed frame. We cut a couple of smaller strips to hold a couple of areas that sort of gaped near the corners.
This worked out perfectly! The legs of the adjustable bases are now hidden, the bedding looks beautiful, and it’s secure even when the bases are adjusted!

Hello!! Is changing the sheets difficult with the footboard? We too have a split king adjustable and just got a frame with a footboard. Any helpful tips? Thanks!
Kelly

It’s really not difficult. There’s a large enough gap that I can easily reach in and lift the mattress the get the fitted sheet in place. In the years that have passed I ended up removing the footboard and went with a bedspread that reaches the floor. Here’s a link to my Amazon storefront- There’s a video of my bed without the footboard here https://amzn.to/3VH6tBU

Can you tell me what bed frame you have? We have a split king adjustable bed and I would love to put it inside a bed frame. Plus your bed frame is very pretty.
Thank you.

Amy- We bought just a standard king bed headboard, footboard, and rails. We bought it at Nebraska Furniture Mart about 6 years ago I guess. I just checked their website and I don’t see our particular bed there. You’ll just leave out the cross bars when you assemble. The bed frames fill the space so well that you don’t need any extra stability to hold the bedframe together. Hope this helps!! Blessings- Kelly

I too have an adjustable split king sleep number bed. I see where you said you removed the mattress to attach the velcro, but with our bed, the mattresses are attached and you cannot remove them from the base. The only way I can see doing what you suggest is to cut the bedskirt off the part that would normally go under the mattress on a regular bed, and either attach velcro or (like someone said above) staple them on the base (but that doesn’t sound very nice when it comes time to wash.) We have dogs and they sometimes will rub up against the bottom of the bed and they will get hair and dander all over it. *SIGH*
I’m tired just thinking about how to do this. LOL

Charlene- We did cut away the part that would normally go between the mattress and box spring. You can sew the velcro strips to the bedskirt and attach it’s counter part onto the bed rails, head board, and footboard. That way it will easily come off for washing. You could try the spiral pins that go through the skirt to the adjustable base but if your mattress is physically attached to the base, I have no idea other than affixing the Velcro to the bed rails and sewing it to the skirt itself in different areas. Thanks so much for touching base. I wish I could be more help. Blessings- Kelly

Sorry if this was already answered but you have so many comments (a good thing) that I got tired of reading them! Doesn’t the velcro on the bedskirt come loose when it is washed?
Kelly
July 16, 2021 @ 12:32 pm
Mary- That’s a possibility. To ensure the velcro stays put you can take a few stitches around it to secure it to the bed ruffle. You could also hit it with a couple of staples to hold it secure while you wash in the delicate cycle. Hope this helps! Blessings- Kelly

Hi
If I understand you correctly, are you saying to attach the bedskirt to the wood frame? I have a 4 poster bed with footboard and side boards. I don’t like my bed without bedskirt either because I put things under the bed and I don’t like seeing the legs of the adjustable bed. Did you have to take all the mattresses and base mattresses off to get inside the side rails and footboard? This is keeping me up nights trying to figure it out.
Kelly
June 7, 2021 @ 11:28 am
Laura- I did remove the mattress to be able to get the bedskirt attached to the bed rails at the correct height. The base is low enough to not be in the way. The velcro is an easy solution. You can add as many strips as it takes to the the bedskirt to hang evenly. I didn’t show this; but I also added shallow staples to the velcro strips to get them more firmly attached to the bed rail. I hope this helps!!

Hi, thanks for the tip! We ordered our Sleep Number flextop king. We are going to be shopping for a new bedroom suit as we currently have a queen bed. My question is do you just plunk the new bed and adjustable frame inside the head/foot board? Does that make sense? The adjustable frame was over $3,000 and i will use it no matter what!!!🤣

Debi- You’re welcome!! And yep, we just basically put the headboard, footboard, and rails around the adjustable bases (we have 2 since it’s a spit king). They don’t attach to the frame. I love my adjustable bed- I sleep on the zero gravity setting every night. 🙂 I’m glad you stopped by! Blessings- Kelly

Hi Kelly
I don’t have a bed frame around the bed but your directions worked great. I only have a leather headboard (which we love). Because there is no frame, I attached it to the moving platform. It still goes up when the bed goes up BUT it stays secure and is so much better than the twist pins that you can buy at BB&B. Those suckers were miserable to put on and especially to take off to wash the skirt. BTW your tip on keeping the tape together and pressing the one side to the base before you adjust the skirt to it is genius. Thanks so much!

Julie- It’s so funny the little things you don’t think about when upgrading your bed! I ended up going with a bedspread that goes to the floor when I last changed my bedding. The bedskirt is still under but you can’t see it. We fold the bedspread back at bedtime so it’s out of the way and we use a blanket that I put on before the bedspread when I make the bed. But man, I love my adjustable bed! I sleep on the zero gravity setting every night. Anytime I visit my kids I can barely sleep and can’t wait to get back to my bed! Thanks so much for stopping by to share your experience! Blessings- Kelly

We recently purchased a split king adjustable bed, and I have also been struggling with bedding options. I love our comforter, but also can’t handle seeing the exposed legs on the adjustable bed. The frame that came with the bed does not fit snug, so I’m reluctant to try the velcro option. What do you think about sewing the ruffle directly onto the comforter?
Kelly
November 9, 2020 @ 2:45 pm
Leota- Sewing the ruffle onto the comforter could work. But it will rise up and down with the beds and likely get caught in places on the frame. We’ve gone to a long ruffle bedspread that sits outside the bedframe. At night we fold the bedspread back and sleep with the blanket that is beneath it. This keeps the bedspread in beautiful shape. If the ruffle is tucked into the frame I just don’t know if you’ll have to spend time pulling it back down. Hope this helps! Blessings- Kelly

Hi, I am wondering if you have trouble with your twin adjustable beds separating in the night? I see you have the bed frame around yours and I wonder if that would help. It drives me nuts and the gap between our beds makes it not comfy to cuddle. I am regretting purchasing these and hope you have a solution.

Mandy- Our mattresses stay tight because they are snug inside our bed frame. I adjust my side and The Mean Man keeps his flat. Even still we are able to sleep close to each other. Our little Yorkie sleeps between us lots of times and the beds are so tight he’s never gotten caught in the crack so to speak. I think the bed rails of our bed frame must be what’s keeping everything together. I thought they make some kind of brackets to attach the beds together otherwise. I’d check with the store where you bought them to see if such a thing exists. Hope this helps! Blessings- Kelly

Hi Kelly! I’m new to the adj bed market as I just bought mine last month. Your blog is WONDERFUL👏👏👏 I moved earlier in the year and I bought 2 nice new comforter sets as a housewarming gift to myself but when my bed came I was not as clever as you and my bed frame set naked until I came across your website. If you use 2 twin bed skirts what do you do with the sides that meet in the middle?
Kelly
September 13, 2018 @ 11:22 pm
Judy- I use the bed skirt that came with my king sized set. Since I attached it to the actual bed rails, there was no issue. A king comforter set it what I use for my split king bed. It makes just like any other bed. The only thing that I buy different is my sheets. A split king set comes with two twin fitted sheets and one king size flat sheet. I don’t know if I’ve helped with my answer but I’m glad you stopped in. Blessings- Kelly

Hey Kelly. May I ask where you purchased the new bed skirt (just the edging) with the twisted pins? I have a skirt that I purchased to go with my comforter and it works okay along the sides, but it’s all bunched up along the foot because of the U-bars. I was looking online to find an easy way to correct this when I came upon your website. If I can find a bed skirt like you mentioned, that would solve my problem! TIA!

Janice- I ordered the new bedskirt from Amazon. I think it’s called Magic Skirt. It’s just the skirting that goes around the edge of the bedframe. I bought the bedskirt twist pins separately- Also at Amazon. Hope this helps! Blessings!

Just read through all the comments. All very helpful. I was forced to use an adjustable split king bed when my husband suffered a spinal cord injury while in the military. I’ve always had bed skirts. I order my adjustable split bed king sz sheets online thru The Sheet People. Fit perfect. Reasonable & good quality.

I love your idea. I actually thought of doing this myself, but I am having problems with the frame of the four-post bed with rails. It wiggles side-to-side! I have some techs coming out. I actually think I could put the dust ruffle under the new mattress on the mechanism, but I have a tech from the retailer coming out to see if the base can be raised a couple of inches. My mattress is also problematic. I have a big gel lump in a new Serta iComfort mattress. Trials and tribulations!!! PS I can totally relate to someone with custom pieces. It must be frustrating to cut up that ruffle!!
Kelly
April 27, 2018 @ 9:04 pm
Mary- What a nightmare!I hope they will get that lump issue resolved- like by giving you a new mattress! We bought our mattress set at Rooms to Go. We bought some new brand from Germany or something- it’s memory foam but also has some kind of foam springs. Whatever it is- I love it. I know how expensive those mattresses are and can only imagine your frustration. Our adjustable frames (we have the two since it’s a split king) fill the bed frame edge to edge so there’s no room really for the bed rails to move.I did find a bedskirt that is just the edge and comes with some twisted pins to adhere it to the actual adjustable bases. My original skirt was destroyed by our new (at the time) puppy so I was back to square one. The new skirt with the pins worked fairly good. I only occasionally had to pull the skirt down from where it got bunched up on the bed frame. Good luck on your bed woes! I hope it gets straightened out!! Blessings- Kelly

Hi girls, I too faced the dilemma years ago when we purchased our adjustable beds. We have the split frame with the u-shaped metal piece at the bottom. I too had a bed skirt that matched my bedding. I laid the bed skirt on the bottom frame, and foundation. I only have a headboard attached. I marked where the holes would need to be cut for the metal u-shape pieces that accompany my bed to keep the mattress from sliding off the end when raising the head portion of the bed. Mine is also a slit king. After cutting the slits we removed the u-shape on each side and threaded the bed skirt on. Then smoothing the skirt making sure corners are aligned once again and I used clear head twist pins to anchor along the skirt starting at the bottom corners as mentioned and from there as needed. I have now found they sell pins for this purpose also. Ocassionally I found the skirt slipping slightly from the head. I had not put any twist pins there. This has worked very well for me.
I have been using this method but now see new options available as I choose new bedding.
I also thought that I might try to cal king skirts which limits what can be found but I believe the center piece of the skirt should be trimmed and anchored if used. That’s just my opinion however. Otherwise I think it would bunch and pull up as the beds are adjusted.
Hope my directions are clear.
Kelly
April 24, 2018 @ 3:40 pm
Shirley- I think that for a bed with a frame all the way around, the ruffle might get caught as the bed bases adjusts up and down. I have seen some ruffles come with the twist pins and think it’s worth a try. Thanks for sharing. Blessings- Kelly

Hi, Kelly,
Thank you for the bedskirt tip as I too prefer the bedskirt, especially since i have a couple of storage boxes under there (uh oh…) which i am probably going to have to eliminate when i get our adjustable bed hopefully by next week. A question: I was wondering how you figured out the best buy for twin XL sheets and how you actually put them on your bed: I came across a few reviews online commenting that it was difficult to put the sheet on, is it? Any tips much appreciated and if you can let me know if you posted already about this topic that would be great. Thank you so very much. We have the split king adjustable bed which is two twin mattresses. The XL of a twin mattress has to do with the length not the width. In trying to put a skirt on the base I had to cut the skirt between the two mattress and fold the raw edge inside to hide it. I attached with Velcro. Hope this helps
Kelly

Hi Kelly, thanks for the tips. I have a split king adjustable memory foam bed also. At the end of each base is a metal railing that supports the mattress from sliding off when using the adjustable feature. This upside down “U” interfears with attaching a bed skirt. What did you do. Thanks.
Kelly
February 13, 2018 @ 10:37 pm
Katherine- I actually just attach the bed skirt to the frame of the bed and not to the mattress/bases. I have a similar base with the metal brace that holds the mattress onto the base. If you’ll just attach your skirt to the headboard, footboard, and rails of the bed itself- it works perfectly (as long as you don’t get a new puppy who insists on grabbing the skirt and running… yes, I’m speaking from experience. I’m glad you stopped by. Blessings- Kelly

Hi, we have 2 XL twin mattresses that make up our king. Will these still fit inside a king bed frame? Thank you.
Kelly
December 30, 2017 @ 12:27 pm
Marguerite- I’d guess yes. I honestly am not 100% sure if ours are XL or not. But, I can say, there is space between the frame and our bases lengthwise. I’d just measure the length of the base and compare it to any bed frame I might choose. I’d hate to risk it, even though I’d guess most stores would allow you to return the furniture if it didn’t work- but save the headache and measure to be sure. Thanks so much for stopping by. Thanks for the helpful suggestion on how to use a bed skirt with an adjustable frame mattress. We just bought a queen mattress with an adjustable base which the salesperson said would fit inside the frame that is attached to our headboard. After we bought it, I started thinking, “OMG, what about my custom-made bed skirt which coordinates with my coverlet, shams, throw pillows, etc.! Yikes! I was planning on using it with the new bed.” I called the salesperson and he said basically the same thing you suggested. Cut away the flat part of the bed skirt that normally lays in between the mattress and box spring. Then attach the bed skirt to the outer frame using Velcro. Your suggestions showed me exactly how to do it, plus your tip on starting at the bottom corner was a good one. Thanks!

this is a great idea but unfortunately i don’t have a bed frame. any suggestions on how to use the bed skirt in my case?
Kelly

Did you use two twin skirts?
When one mattress raises and the other is flat, I am finding it is pulling on the skirt. I used your suggestion with the Velcro, thank you, it worked well and was so easy to install, I have no frame just head board , but I think I need two twin skirts?
Kelly
March 21, 2017 @ 8:14 pm
Shelly- I actually used only one king size bed skirt. By attaching it directly to the frame, we haven’t had issues with it riding up when the beds are adjusted. The only issues we’ve had is our new puppy going under the bed. He likes to grab the skirt and pull it- so it’s come loose from where it’s velcroed to the frame. If you’re attaching to the actual frames the beds sit on, I’d probably do two twin skirts. I hope this helps. I’m glad you stopped by. Blessings! Kelly
