Paying a mortgage is just a part of home ownership. There are tasks that come up either yearly, monthly, or even weekly. Neglecting regular home maintenance can cost you in the long run. Some tasks seem miniscule in the grand scheme of things, but if not handled can become big expensive jobs. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time to get home maintenance tasks done.

Let’s talk about a few of those pesky home maintenance jobs we cannot afford to let slide.

The doorbell

Okay, this seem like a very minor repair to take on, but if you want your home to be in tip top shape, no task is too inconsequential. A home with a nonworking doorbell gives the impression of lack of care by the homeowner. Many homeowners have replaced their traditional doorbells with smart cameras. If you’re not ready to make that investment, you can replace the doorbells with traditional equipment fairly easily. You, of course, need to take precautions no matter what style doorbell you install. Even though you’ll be working with a low voltage wiring, you can still be injured. Follow directions and don’t skip any steps.

Electricity

Non-working electrical plugs in your home need to be addressed. Getting to the cause of the why the outlet is not working is important because it could be a fire hazard. Loose plugs are also dangerous because they can be pulled from the wall, exposing wiring. Constantly having breakers tripped can also be a sign of a significant electrical problem. Bringing in a trusted electrician is the best way to correct these types of issues.

While the electrician is there, you may want to have them change out regular light switches with ones that dim. This is great in dining rooms where you might want to create ambiance. Also have them install a timer switch that works on a timer for your porch lights. That way you won’t waste energy if you forget to turn them off.

Clean the gutters

If there is rain water pouring over the edges of the gutters; there is a problem that needs to be addressed. It’s likely that there is a blockage in your gutters somewhere down the line. Clearing your gutters should be done at least twice a year. Clogged gutters are not just annoying, they can cause damage to your roof by water overflowing over your roof line. This, in turn, can cause water damage inside and outside of your home.

Add a leaf guard to the top of your gutters that will allow water to flow but will keep leaves and other objects from getting into the gutter system. This will help keep gutters clear throughout the year.

Protect your investment

These are just a few tips to help protect your biggest investment; your home. Small repair items become big expensive repairs if not addressed. Don’t wait until you have a catastrophic failure in your home. Maintain your home and keep it’s value high.
