Making your house exactly how you’ve always dreamed can be a daunting task. It can take years of planning, saving, and work. But, that is the beauty of having your own space to play with. Don’t rush things. Make a somewhat detailed plan you’d like to implement and start working towards making it happen. When thinking about making some big changes, people generally start with higher traffic areas of the house. Typically most people choose a bathroom or kitchen. Why? Well, they are the most used areas in most homes. That being said, let’s focus on bathrooms today.

There is so much more to consider besides beautifully scented candles and luxury towels when you decide to upgrade your bathroom.

Shop around

If you’re like most of us, the cost of the project is the biggest consideration. Setting and keeping to your budget will make you shop for the best value you possibly can for a big job like this. Even jobs that seem simple like replacing faucets, can end up costing you more in the long run if your don’t get it right. Adding a new tub or shower surround is definitely more than most of us can handle. It’s just a better idea to hire a professional to take on these tasks. You need to have a list of what you want to have done in the room. Think of things like getting the drains upgraded in size, so  you’re less likely to get clogs that will need unblocking. Ideally, getting quotes from three or four different companies is best. This will give you a starting point for negotiation. Getting a competitive quote from reputable companies like Maplewood Plumbing  is a great place to start. You want to use a company that you can trust.

Color Counts

We’ve talked about room colors before. Remember, different colors have a different impact on us. In a bathroom, you’re going to want to stick with something you’d see in a spa – greens, neutrals, browns, grays, or whites are the most common. Colors that promote a calming feeling can be found among the blues and greens. Adding elements from nature can switch our brains to the great outdoors giving you green therapy in your own home. I love my bathroom and find it’s a place I love to use for escape and relaxation. This room can promote a feeling of well being and peace.

Light it Up

Many times bathrooms have no windows or the windows they have are likely heavily frosted. Privacy is, of course, most important in this particular room. Having adequate lighting is super important for women who are applying makeup or for men when they need to see to shave their faces. However, there is a lot to be said for a good dimmer switch for those times when you’re ready to soak away the days stress in your tub. You can add a dimmer switch yourself. They come in a variety of styles. This will allow even a light fixture that gives off wonderful bright light when fully lit to become that perfect light for a spa like feeling at other times.

A tile floor adds a luxury element to your bathroom. The great thing about tile is that it comes in all sizes, shapes, and colors. You can go with mosaic tiles that have great visual interest, to plain white ceramic tiles. Many bathrooms have tiled floors that slope straight into the shower space and drain. We picked up the ceramic tiles we used for our master bath for literally less that $1 per square foot. These floors are economic, easy to clean, and waterproof. Throw in some pretty bathroom rugs and you’ve added tons of style and comfort!

If you’re confused about storage space, your contractor should have some great ideas. Many vanities have wonderful storage cabinets with shelves that offer storage for days. Our vanity is like this. there is a center shelf that allows for twice as much storage even when making room for the plumbing. Wall cabinets are another wonderful option. We used an open shelf and mason jars to hold my bath salts and bombs. Depending on your space, you may have to get creative. We added a metal and glass shelf unit to hold my shampoos and soaps close to the tub. It’s worked out wonderfully.

After you have all of these very necessary elements added to your bathroom, you can then concentrate on adding the lovely scented candles and plush towels. This can be such a fun room to decorate.
